Lord of the Flies

Epilogue

After docking on a military base in the United Kingdom, and receiving a full check up, all the boys were taken into a room, followed by some official looking men and a women.

Jack, Ralph, and many of the other boys including Sam and Eric sat in a room colorless room, with two military officials, and a therapist. No one dared to speak first. The adults had no idea why the boys would not speak. They seemed to be scarred, or traumatized. Jack looked at the ground, next to Roger, while Ralph gave him a deathly stare. It was not an angry stare. It was one of disbelief. Sam and Eric, the twins, now sat to Ralphs left. They did not dare look up from the ground from fear of making eye contact with Ralph or with Jack. The room was deadly silent

The two military men were contrasting, one wearing a standard issue uniform, looking quite younger than the older officer who was decorated in many medals and titles. The older officer gave the women a look, and she began. “Boys, we understand that you may not be ready to talk, but this is a matter of national importance. Did you notice and details about the crash? Maybe what the plane that shot you down looked like; Any symbols or markings on it?” she asked, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. Not a single person’s expression or stance changed. “Boys, listen. This is an important issue! We are investigating what happened and its urgent. What about while on the island? Did you notice any planes or carriers go by while you were stranded?” she asked this time with a little more request in her voice. Ralph looked up with tears in his eyes, and looked into the soul of Jack. “ Why couldn't you just keep the signal fire going!”  exclaimed Ralph accusingly. The looks of confusion that filled the faces of the uninformed tore through the group like shrapnel. They all knew what Ralph had meant.

Suddenly, out of all of the boys, it was Roger who spoke. “It wasn't his fault. Quit yelling at him.” he practically growled at Ralph. “You shut your dirty mouth Ral-” was all that Ralph could spit back at Roger before he was on his feet with his chair raised above his head. He brought it down full force onto Ralphs head. Blood spurted from his skull, and Jack let a wicked smile escape. The twins seemed to show any remorse either. The two guards subdued Roger. He tried fighting back, but he was no match. He was no longer one of the biguns. The therapist had a look of fear on her face but didnt dare speak. The other boys just looked to each other for a reaction. It was clear that they would never be the same again.
